    The scene where they use the piston engine planes propellers to manoeuvre the ship. Did they really do this? Would it have worked on a vessel of that size?

    • @AntoineMackie
      @AntoineMackie Месяц назад

      The scene is also described in quite detail in the book. From what I could find, this type of maneuver was called "Operation Pinwheel" and was quite common in the piston aircraft era to help steer the ship, although very taxing on the engines. You can find lots of other examples, also on RN carriers, if you Google "Operation Pinwheel".

    My Dad had a walk-on part in the movie Wings Over Honolulu. He escorted the admiral’s daughter down the ship’s ladder. Later he became an admiral. Flew in the first class of Aviation Cadets at Pensacola. The jet type in this movie was the only jet-powered airplane he ever flew. Single seat, so he had to read the manual and get it right the first time…

    You really get an appreciation for just how long the USA has been launching jets from carriers. Even back then they had evolved it to a very reliable and sophisticated system with amazing innovations and hardware that has continued to evolve. The management systems that make it all happen like a theatre production behind the scenes are amazing.

    Classic filmmaking. Planes fly inbound left to right, return right to left. You really managed to scrub everything about the plot of the movie from this footage; it's been a long time since I partially saw the movie so it's hard for me to recall much about it. They really do a great job mixing in the real footage with what I assume have to be models.

    Questions for military pilots: First...As soon as Brubaker realized that he was losing fuel, shouldn't he have gained several thousand feet of altitide to guarantee that he could glide over the mountain to the sea? Second...would it have been possible for CAG to push Brubaker by putting the nose of his plane into the no-longer-working exhaust of Brubaker's? Lastly...Wouldn't it have been more effective for the prop planes to use a staggered, 10-second, one-by-one formation to strafe the ground troops and protect the helicopter instead of flying four abreast?

    There is a link to the Bridges at Toko-Ri and Topgun. The movie is filmed and set onboard the USS Oriskany In the original Topgun When Maverick is at Vipers house and is in the living room he sees the photo of Viper and Duke (Mavericks dad) together and viper sees that maverick notices the photo he tells maverick that both he and his dad served together onboard the USS Oriskany. Oriskany was part Task force 11 during the Vietnam war and operated in designated area Yankee Station which from 64-66 operated about 100 miles east of Da Nang in south Vietnam.Mavricks dad was shot down on November 5th 1965 as part of VF-51 who flew secret combat missions between 1964 and 1965. A week after the events mentioned Oriskany recieved orders to depart for Subic bay which it arrived at on November 30th before returning to san diego. Task force 77 was also the designated taskforce that the USS Oriskany served with during the Korean war and is mentioned in the movie

    This film is based on the novel by writer and playwright James A. Michener and starring William Holden, Grace Kelly, Mickey Rooney and Frederic March, was filmed in 1953 shortly after the end of the Korean War (July 1953) and released in 1954, one of the locations it was the USS Oriskany aircraft carrier and the aircraft used were the Grumman F-9F Panther and the Sikorsky S-55 helicopter (the other protagonists of the film), for that time the F-9Fs were already to be retired and replaced with the Grumman F-9 Cougar instead which is why it is observed in the film that two F-9Fs suffer an accident, one falls into the sea and the other falls to the ground, both of which were probably piloted remotely or maybe film trickery was used.

    My dad had photos of the Panther, and Sky Raider , and can not think of the name right now another Jet fighter, used by Marines and Navy, while he was in Korea. The intresting story is from WW2, They were looking to build our first fighter jet, and North American Aviation , had sent in a proposal but the U.S. Government in their wisdom said no because they needed them to produce the P51 and B25, etc. But then North American learned the Navy wanted a jet, so they designed, developed the FJ-1 Fury, a very cool bird of prey, then all of the sudden the air force got intrested and from the FJ-1 came the F86 Sabre and the FJ-2, the U.S.S. Orskiny as we can see was out fitted with the angled flight deck, so they FJ-2 Fury was the first Navy and Marine Fighter with swept back wings and 4 20 mm colt guns in the nose. Just a beautiful fighter along with the Panther, then came the FJ-3 and FJ-4's , I recall reading a statement from a Marine Corps General, put after burners in them and We will smoke those North Vietnamese aka Chinesse and Soviet Migs in short order.
